Sunset Beach North Carolina
SUNSET BEACH,
NORTH CAROLINA
South of historic Wilmington, North Carolina, and just north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, lies the beautiful coastal village of Sunset Beach. Officially incorporated in 1963, Sunset Beach has been a quietly kept secret of natives and dedicated beach lovers. Over the decades, it has remained a wholesome, family-oriented community and was ranked as the #1 barrier island on the North Carolina coast by Duke University. Sunset Beach is three miles long and is the quietest of the three south-facing North Carolina barrier islands, commonly referred to as the South Brunswick Islands. In order to get to the island, travelers must slow down and wait to cross the one-lane wood and steel bridge, possibly the only functioning pontoon bridge on the East Coast.
The wide, gently sloping, white sand beaches and pristine sand dunes are a natural habitat for nesting Loggerhead Sea Turtles and other wildlife. Enjoy the relaxed pace of this beautiful island for yourself. You'll fall in love with the tranquilty and natural setting of this peaceful island delight. Sunset Beach NC
Make sure that your visit to Sunset Beach includes a stop at the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island. Bird Island is a 1300 acre Coastal Reserve on the west side of Sunset Beach. It was once a separate island, but in the 1990's the inlet was closed by natural causes, so now it's just a short walk along the Sunset Beach shoreline at the west end. Notebooks, pens and pencils are kept in the mailbox for visitors to share their thoughts, poems, prayers and ideas. During the summer months, locals organize informal tours of Bird Island.

Locals and visitors frequent the wide array of dining establishments in nearby Shallotte, Ocean Isle Beach and Calabash, "The Seafood Capital of the World".
